How Poland Quietly Conquered the Luxury Yacht Market – and Why a Marina in France Is Worried About Young Fish

This week in the industry reveals two sides of the same sea. On one hand, hard business: Polish shipyards that have gone from quiet subcontractors to serious players in the luxury vessel market. On the other, care for the ecosystem these yachts sail in — the award-winning project from the D-Marin marina network, bringing life back beneath the pontoons. Together, they offer a solid cross-section of where yachting is headed today.

01 · Shipbuilding Industry

Poland's Quiet Luxury Powerhouse [1]

Not so long ago, Polish facilities were mainly associated with cheap labor for Western brands. Today that has been reversed. Shipyards such as Sunreef, Galeon, and Conrad have made the journey from subcontractor to producer of complete, luxury vessels aimed at clientele seeking the very top shelf – not a semi-finished product, but a ready, polished yacht with Polish roots.

The scale of this shift is impressive: Poland is now Europe's leader and the world's second-largest producer in the 6-12 meter motorboat segment. Importantly, this is no longer assembly from imported parts – most tank testing, interior carpentry, and electronic installation now take place locally, giving full control over quality and production pace.

Paradoxically, the pandemic cemented this advantage. While Western competitors got bogged down in supply chain delays, Polish shipyards kept production running without interruption. For customers who wait months, sometimes years, for their dream yacht, that difference proved to be an unbeatable argument – and today it is paying off with a position the industry did not expect even a decade ago.

02 · Marina Ecology

A Marina That Thinks About Fish, Not Just Moorings [2]

Speaking of an industry maturing – the approach to what happens beneath the hulls of moored vessels is maturing too. The D-Marin marina network was awarded the title of Best CSR Initiative at the Innovation Route Awards for its Biohut program, run jointly with the Ecocean organization.

The idea is as simple as it is elegant: underwater structures that act as "nurseries" for young fish, installed directly into marina infrastructure. So far, 171 of these have been installed across four locations – in France, Greece, Italy, and Croatia. Monitoring carried out at Port Camille Rayon confirms this is no mere PR gesture – it documented 14 fish species and as many as 42 invertebrate species using these habitats.

The project also has an educational dimension. As part of Biodiversity Day, children and young people visiting the marinas get an up-close look at local marine fauna, building ecological awareness among the youngest visitors – and, along the way, among their parents, who are usually customers of those same marinas.

Two Poles of the Same Industry

A luxury yacht built with Polish precision and an underwater nursery for fish in a Provençal port – seemingly distant stories, and yet both say the same thing: today the yachting industry is growing not only technologically and commercially, but responsibly too. These very threads – from advanced manufacturing to sustainable management of port infrastructure – will be the subject of discussion at BOAT TECHNICA – International Trade Fair for Yacht Building, Equipment and Yacht Accessories. Stay tuned for the next installments of our industry review, and be sure to mark your calendar for the fair.
